Spikenard Essential Oil - a Bible Healing Oil

Spikenard essential oil always brings to my mind the story of Mary anointing Jesus feet.

Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.John 12:3, KJV

Nardostachys grandifloraAfter having used various essential oils over the years, it is no longer surprising to me that Mary's use of spikenard in anointing Jesus' feet would fill the house with odor. It can take as few as 20 drops of essential oil in a strategic spot (like the filter of the air circulation system) and the entire house will have its air freshened.

Even though the essential oils of today are doubtless more concentrated that what was available during the time of Christ, a pound of ointment had to have an overwhelming aroma, as spikenard essential oil does not have a subtle scent!

The Spiritual Connection: Spikenard Essential Oil

Spikenard in the Bible:

And [Christ] being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 22:44, KJV

I was surprised to read that spikenard essential oil (Nardostachys grandiflora) belongs to the same family as valerian. I also read that it is used to overcome the misuse of the will and feelings of power over authority figures. Isn't that interesting?

We know that Christ wrestled in the garden of Gethsemane... his human nature shrank from the horrors that he knew he would have to endure. I have no doubt he was sorely tempted to abandon the plan to be our sacrifice. Why should he die for these ungrateful, hateful beings? It makes me wonder if the spikenard that he was anointed with aided Him during this trial. What do you think?
