It is in the nature of babies to be in bliss. DEEPAK CHOPRA
When it comes to babies, all things “b” come to mind-beautiful beginnings, bonding experiences, and blissful years ahead. The birth of a baby brings joy and a deep sense of appreciation for the miracle of life. Monica Peterson, who recently gave birth to her first child, Mateo, described it as “the most incredible, life-changing experience.” Wanting to make the birthing experience as natural and memorable as possible, Monica used aromatherapy as part of her labor and delivery. “I wanted to create the perfect environment to bring my baby into the world, so I diffused Young Living's lavender essential oil in the birthing room. The lavender aroma helped me concentrate on my breathing, helped me relax, and really set the tone for a calm environment.”
Aromatherapy for pregnancy and birth has been practiced since ancient times-the queens in royal palaces were known to use essential oils during pregnancy and birth. Today, a growing number of women are embracing natural, alternative models of pregnancy health care and are using aromatherapy to help them address specific needs before, during, and after delivery.
With three children of her own, Dr. Simone Harari understands women's physical, spiritual, and emotional needs before, during, and after pregnancy. She has developed a program for pregnant women at her spa, Body of Truth® Holistic Wellness and Day Spas in New York. Dr. Harari is helping her clients celebrate every aspect of pregnancy with a holistic program that is designed to make pregnant women more comfortable on every level: physical, emotional, and spiritual. “You can be comfortable through your entire pregnancy by using different essential oils to meet your body's needs,” she explains. The idea is that by minimizing the strain and discomfort that accompany a normal pregnancy, women can experience a healthy and happy pregnancy and birthing experience.
Massage for moms-to-be is just one of the many exceptional services offered at Body of Truth. The prenatal massage session is specifically designed to help alleviate musculoskeletal strain and pain, aid in stress reduction, and facilitate the physiological processes of pregnancy. Each individualized session includes instruction on home relaxation and stretching techniques. In addition, Dr. Harari and her staff of certified massage therapists and other experts in their fields offer training to nursing staff at a local hospital's maternity ward on using essential oils in prenatal classes, during labor and delivery, and with postpartum and nursing issues for both mother and baby.
To assist expectant moms with relaxation, Dr. Harari highly recommends applying and diffusing Young Living's Peace & Calming®, lavender, and Gentle Baby™. She also shares other personal favorites: “Grapefruit is my favorite essential oil mixed with Cel-Lite Magic™ Massage Oil (discontinued) for prenatal massages to ease the swelling in the ankles and move the fluids. Gentle Baby mixed with V-6™ is great for helping the elasticity of the perineum and prevented any tearing or episiotomy during all three of my deliveries. Gentle Baby is also great for dad to wear during delivery so mom, baby, and dad are aromatically bonded. Frankincense and myrrh are great on the umbilical cord too, and helped it mend so much faster. Finally, for breast discomfort, Cel-Lite Magic Massage Oil and tangerine essential oil massaged onto the breast really worked wonders every time!”
Aromatherapy is a natural way to assist with the discomforts and anxiety experienced by many women during pregnancy. “When you take away the fear, it lessens the pain. When people are physically uncomfortable, they become fearful. When you become fearful, your muscles tighten up. Working with the oils is empowering, and I want to help other moms feel empowered,” Dr. Harari explains. “If my children don't feel well, have a fever or a stuffy nose, or get a bump, it is so incredible to be able to go to my essential oils kit and do something about it for those nonemergency situations. I can help my children feel well immediately without harming their little bodies with drugs that have dyes and all sorts of other fillers. I love my essential oils!”
During her own pregnancies, labors, and while nursing, Dr. Harari found that chiropractic care made a tremendous difference in alleviating discomfort. Her chiropractor, Dr. Lori Morris, uses Young Living essential oils at Body of Truth to meet patients' needs. “Women often experience nausea and digestive problems in the early stages of pregnancy,” Dr. Morris explains. “I apply peppermint, ginger, EndoFlex™, and JuvaFlex™ essential oils topically to help with these discomforts. I also use the oils to relax the patient because giving birth is an anxious process. My favorites are Peace & Calming, lavender, and Joy™.
Cindi Field, the mother of ten-month-old twin boys, occasionally rubbed Young Living's essential oil blend Joy on her abdomen throughout her pregnancy because she loves the aroma. In addition, she applied lavender, Gentle Baby, and virgin coconut oil on her abdomen to relieve the itching. With no sign of stretch marks, Cindi shares that she has seen many benefits to using Young Living essential oils before, during, and after her pregnancy. “My husband rubbed Valor® on my shoulders and feet at night to help me relax. I was able to sleep better even though I was carrying twins! After my babies were born and we brought them home, I diffused Purification® and R.C. ™ throughout the house to purify the air during the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) season of December 2005. We are very blessed to have happy, healthy babies and to be able to care for our family with therapeutic-grade essential oils.”
